Self-Defence benefits of Heavy Bag training

January 31st, 2011 · No Comments

The Heavy Bag is most often used suspended from a ceiling but should also be used on the ground to practice ground striking as well. It can be punched, kicked, kneed and elbowed. Used correctly it can improve the power of your striking and gives a great cardio workout as well, but if used improperly can cause injuries.

The Self-Defence benefits of Heavy Bag training

Striking the heavy bag can develop great fight related qualities but is nothing like a real combat situation. The strikes used against the heavy bag are what’s known as Gross Motor Skills meaning they are simple actions using large muscle groups and when used under an Adrenal Dump status (the bodies Fight or Flight response) will often result in a greater performance in terms of strength and endurance.

Training your striking skills can lead to an increased confidence in your ability to strike an opponent which can be beneficial to those whom may be reluctant to fight back or suffer greatly under the bodies adrenal responses.

Good strike training, against the heavy bag, pads and sparring with partner(s) builds competence and confidence and develops ‘muscle memory’ so when confronted by an assailant gives the ability for the body to strike as it does in training without the person making a concious effort to strike with these developed skills.

The dual sides of Martial Arts

November 6th, 2010 · No Comments

‘Martial Arts’ is universal despite its variations from all over the world. The only disparity becomes obvious in the theory and philosophy governing it. Generally self preservation or self defense is its sole purpose. Not just a theory or philosophy but ‘martial arts’ is also an art. It is commonly believed to have originated in the East, Asia to be exact. With its increasing popularity, the concept as well as the theory and practice of martial arts was adopted by the western world. With the adoption followed some adaptations that altered some of its philosophy and movements. The adapted version has slowly risen and its beginnings were recognized.

Both Western and Asian martial arts are aimed at self preservation and defending others under attack. As a sport, the objective is to conquer the opponent. Despite similarities in objectives, they differ in so many ways. The Western discipline began during the medieval period in the form of fencing, while Asian Martial Art started with bare hands fighting. The western world considers Martial Arts to be a physical activity meant for self defense and sports victories. In Asia, the focus is on the individual’s spirituality and its discipline is to redress the body, mind and spirit for energy and power of the practitioner.

There are many diverse fighting techniques, originating from a large number of countries. Most traditional fighting techniques concentrate on the fluidity and gracefulness of movement rather than the effectiveness of the technique. Modern fighting techniques concentrate more on the effectiveness of the technique, but as a consequence, these techniques are poor in graceful movements.

Beside the obvious goal of defending oneself and defeating another, people learn these fighting techniques for a variety of other reasons. These techniques may be practiced as a form of exercise (indeed most fighting techniques are proven to increase strength, flexibility and endurance) or as a sport. Also some people practice these fighting techniques as a form of worship or belief. The armed forces of a country are almost always given some form of training in fighting techniques, in order for them to effectively carry out their duty.

There are martial arts classes available for those people who are interested in it. Most of these classes will concentrate on a single fighting technique, but even a single technique can encompass a broad range of fighting skills and practices.
