The benefits of martial arts

November 30th, 2011 · No Comments

Martial arts is a rather collective term indicating different traditions of combat. Most people mistakenly think of martial arts as fighting arts practiced in the greater East Asia, but this is inaccurate. Granted, they can be categorized into martial arts, but the definition of martial art stretches past that. One can get into martial arts for all kinds of reasons. In the west, most people indulge because they want to learn self-defense. But this is just one reason, and apparent benefit of martial arts.

Another is that you learn discipline. Martial arts teach of control above power, so you really learn the art of control. This is what gives way to discipline. You involve your body, depending on the specific variation of martial arts that you have decided to specialize in. In other words, it’s a means of keeping fit. Capoeira is a fine example. It needs you to be really fit and really agile for you to be any good at it.

Martial arts improve your overall self-esteem. You feel like you have assumed a position of power, and this does a lot to your self-worth and confidence. It also provides a way of venting out as you find something to direct energy to. Consequently, this reduces your stress levels, which is another plus.
