The term Martial Arts has been derived from the word Mars who is considered to be the Roman god of war and mentions to the art of warfare. The earliest evidence of an organized training in special kinds of martial arts comes from the late 1st millennium BC in both, Asia and Europe. They term may be taken to refer to any type of organized combat system. A person who practices martial arts is known as martial artist. Martial arts were developed in different countries in different ways getting influenced by different cultures along its way too.
Martial arts have many styles and each of the style can have its own features depending on the type of characterization of the techniques used in fighting and defending. For training there are two methods that are popular. Once is called sparring (simulated combat) and the other one is known as formal sets or routines of techniques known as “forms” or “kata”. The modern martial arts are a blend of the Chinese and Indian martial arts.
The purpose of martial arts is usually to attack your enemy or to defend yourself if attacked by someone. They can be classified according to the types of strikes, grappling, or weapons. The classification is as follows:
Strikes:
• Punching: Boxing (Western), Wing Chun,
• Kicking: Capoeira, Savate, Taekwondo, Kickboxing
• Other strikes: Karate, Muay Thai
Grappling:
• Throwing: Glima, Judo, Sambo
• Joint lock/Chokes/Submission holds: Aikido, Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Chin Na, Jujutsu, Hapkido, Silat, Sambo
• Pinning Techniques: Judo, Shuai Jiao, Wrestling, Sambo
Weaponry:
• Traditional Weaponry: Eskrima, Fencing, Kendo, Ky?d?
• Modern Weaponry: Jukendo
